Code of Conduct: What Every Councillor Should Know

Good conduct is the foundation of an effective council. This one‑hour online training session distils our popular on‑site workshop into the essential principles every councillor needs to know — making it easier than ever to access this important learning from anywhere.

We will cover:

  • Conduct in meetings and beyond – understanding how your actions reflect on the council, both in the council chamber and in the community.

  • Acting as part of the council – recognising that you serve as a member of the council as a whole, not as an individual, and that you operate within a clear legal framework.

  • Your declaration of acceptance of office – what it means in practice to serve your community as an elected (or co‑opted) member of a tier of government established in law.

  • Roles and responsibilities – clarity on the duties of councillors, chairs and clerks, and how this underpins professional and respectful conduct.

  • The benefits of good conduct – effective decision‑making, cohesive teamwork, and community trust, all guided by the Nolan Principles.

  • The impact of poor conduct – how fragmentation and disharmony can disrupt council business and damage its reputation.

Whether you are new to the role or an experienced councillor looking to refresh your knowledge, this focused, accessible session will give you the tools to support a positive, respectful and legally sound council environment.

The fee is £25 for a one-hour, virtual, trainer-led session
