The Employment Rights Bill – What’s Changing

The Employment Rights Bill represents one of the most significant reforms to UK employment law in recent years. Following consultation, review and parliamentary scrutiny, the legislation is progressing toward implementation.

Employers can expect developments including:

  • Strengthened employee protections and new workplace rights

  • Potential changes to dismissal protections and employment status

  • Updates affecting contracts, working arrangements and employer responsibilities

  • Phased implementation of new measures once the legislation comes into force

Understanding these changes early will help councils ensure their policies, procedures and employment practices remain compliant. Employment arrangements within local councils can be particularly distinct from other workplaces. This makes it especially important for councillors and clerks to understand their roles, responsibilities and legal obligations as employers.
