Welcome to our New Councillor Toolkit. This training is specifically designed for first-time councillors and aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively serve your community. This course will help you understand your roles and responsibilities, conduct yourself confidently at council meetings, and learn how GAPTC supports you in your role.

What You Will Complete:

• Introductory Webinar: A 60-minute introduction to GAPTC and the role of a councillor.

• Council Meetings: You participated in two council meetings, observing the dynamics and understanding the practical aspects of council operations.

• E-learning Module: You completed the "Introduction to Local Councils" e-learning module, which covered fundamental concepts and practices.

• Feedback Webinar: A 60-minute feedback session with GAPTC to consolidate your learning, ask questions and note observations.

Delegates will learn:

• Role of Parish Councils: Understand the fundamental role and responsibilities of parish councils in representing community interests and influencing local outcomes.

• GAPTC Services: Discover the various services offered by GAPTC, including specialist training, networking opportunities, mentoring, and more.

• Councillor Duties and Responsibilities: Learn about the key duties and responsibilities of a councillor, including the Declaration of Acceptance of Office, Register of Interests, and adhering to the Code of Conduct.

• Meeting Conduct: Gain insights on how to conduct yourself during council meetings, including understanding meeting procedures, agenda preparation, and effective participation.

• Induction Process: Familiarise yourself with the induction process, including learning about current and past council projects, a tour of the parish, and an introduction to key council documents and resources.
